7 Interesting Reasons You Might Think You Don't Need a website

My business is too small, and I don’t have the budget for a website.

This is the most common objection we hear from small business owners. Remember: your website is your number one marketing asset. Saying you don’t have the budget for it is like saying you don’t have the budget for a business license. You are going to miss a large source of business in the future and lose out on essential income. Get a website! It doesn’t have to be fancy and expensive, but it needs to exist and be found by search engines. There are even some free options available (with limited functionality)

I already have enough business. I don’t need a website.

Even if you have more business than you can handle, you need a website. A website doesn’t need to be built solely for adding new customers. According to a study conducted in 2019, 83 percent of Americans look up business locations, directions, and hours of operation on their smartphones or tablets. This trend is similar in South Africa. A good website will answer basic questions right away, freeing up your time if you’re spending a lot of it answering questions on the phone

I have a guy that said he could make me a website for free (or at a much lower cost).

Be very careful. Having a friend, family member, or contact “on the cheap” make your website is like trusting an inexperienced driver to drive a high-performance racing car. A LOT goes into having an optimised website: SEO optimisation, file compression, responsive design, schema markup, etc.—and if it isn’t built on the right foundation, it will not achieve the desired results. Different industries have different website design standards. For example, a website for accounting services will have completely different components and markup than a website for the hospitality industry

Our customers aren’t big computer users.

You are forgetting that computer users aren’t just people using desktop computers. It also includes people browsing websites, social media, and apps on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. Most of us own a smartphone, and since 2016, mobile web traffic has outpaced desktop web traffic.

Smartphone/Tablet User = Computer User

I don’t need a website because my industry doesn’t need one.

This is an unfortunate misconception. Consumers still need to find you, learn about you, and trust you before they buy from you. Most of our clients have seen considerable revenue growth and won consumer trust from having a website

I don’t really have competition for my business

In today’s digital age, having a website is essential to staying competitive. Most businesses, regardless of size or industry, have an online presence. Without a website, you risk falling behind your competitors who are leveraging the internet to reach and engage with customers. A well-designed website not only helps you keep up with the competition but also positions your business as modern and forward-thinking. It allows you to showcase your unique value proposition and stand out in a crowded market.

I can use social media instead.

While social media is a great form of marketing, it can never replace the purpose of a website. Here are a few reasons why:

  • A well-designed website enhances your professionalism and credibility, making a strong impression on potential customers. Relying solely on social media can make a business appear less established or serious.
  • Websites provide full control over content, design, and functionality, whereas social media platforms have restrictions and can change their policies at any time.
  • Social media pages can never give a full scope of your company, services, or products with purpose-built navigation. Social media is a great extension used as a tool to get people to visit your website or purchase from your online store.
  • Organic reach on social media is decreasing significantly. You have likely noticed that ads on social media are increasing. This means less organic (non-paid) reach for content from brands and other publishers. It’s becoming harder to reach your followers without spending a lot of money on social media
